Mute began life when the band’s publisher asked for instrumental versions of the songs to pitch for movie placements. But as the vocals were stripped away and the instrumental versions revealed, the idea for a totally instrumental album was conceived. Just back from a tour with Hawkwind and their Mike Batt conducted 26 piece orchestra, the experience of a rock band and orchestra on full throttle had been exhilarating and we were hungry to try it for ourselves. The songs started to be extended, rearranged and enhanced with additional instruments and orchestration to the point that some were barely recognisable from their origins and became new entities in their Mute form. Mute was originally conceived as an ‘album in between albums’ but evolved into a new and very different album in its own right.
